New Thing #45: Fried Ice Cream

Posted in Uncategorized by kimwilcox on September 27, 2010

Two months ago while walking through the streets of Cordoba, Argentina I participated in a conversation about ice cream with Jason and Mario.  Somehow this discussion led to fried ice cream. The boys were talking about how amazing it was and I realized I had never had it.  I know what you’re thinking, how have you never tried fried ice cream? I don’t know. But it became immediately evident that this must become a new thing. I love ice cream. And hearing Jason and Mario talk up fried ice cream got me excited to try it.

Mario (whom I had never hung out with back home in the states) said we should go to this place in Overland Park that serves the best he’s ever had. I agreed, but in the back of my head though “yeah right, we’ve never hung out before so I doubt we’ll really go” (not that I didn’t want to). Fast forward almost two months and guess who took me to the restaurant to get “the best  fried ice cream ever”.

The restaurant is Wil Jenny’s, a fun place that serves a variety of food. Just to give you a glimpse of that variety- Mario ordered steak and seafood, while I ordered BBQ. They also offer home cooked meals, Mexican and sandwiches.  While I enjoyed the food, because it was REALLY good, I couldn’t wait for dessert.  It had been HIGHLY talked up so I eager to see if it was really as good as Mario claimed. It was. Man, oh, man. It was probably the best dessert I’ve had in my entire life. A huge scoop of ice cream covered in…whatever the fried shell is was served with four churros. The entire thing was amazing.

I can’t wait to go back. I’d even make the drive to O.P. just to order the fried ice cream. Totally worth it.

New Thing #44: Painting Pottery

Posted in Uncategorized by kimwilcox on September 26, 2010

I enjoyed new thing #44 while getting to know a new friend, Kaitlyn, a couple of weeks ago. We spent a lovely Saturday afternoon painting and chatting at Pottery Art in Independence. Little did we know how time-consuming this adventure would be (for us anyway). 🙂 We spent nearly an hour trying to decide on what type of pottery we wanted to paint. After we finally chose (Kaitlyn vase, me- snack bowl), it took us another 15-20ish minutes to pick our paints. Then the creating began. And lasted for several more hours. Fortunately we enjoyed each others’ company because we were there another 4-ish hours once the painting began. It was such a great experience. Despite not being very artistic (I basically copied off a way cute example they had), it was a blast! I can’t wait to go back, but have a few tips to ensure next time will be more quick, smooth experience. I need to go with an idea of what piece I want to paint and pre-think of designs so I’m not simply “stealing” it from the examples.  I highly recommend going. It’s a great atmosphere for sitting down and visiting with friends. What a great way to get to know/catch up with a pal or two…or more. Happy painting!

New Thing #43: Irish Fest

Posted in Uncategorized by kimwilcox on September 26, 2010

This may perhaps be the shortest of my posts because I waited so long to blog about it. Three weeks ago I had my first Irish Fest experience. The music was fun, there was some good food (and I emphasis the word “some” because there really wasn’t as much Irish food as there should have been) and the company was INCREDIBLE. I had a fun Friday night at Crown Center. The best part of the night was watching one or two people dance while listening to the bands. I will absolutely be going again next year.

Sorry to Kyndal, Dave, Rob, Shane, Brooke and Meg for not getting you in any pics. I greatly enjoyed your company despite the lack of pics. 🙂

New Thing #42: Paddle Boating

Posted in Uncategorized by kimwilcox on September 7, 2010

I can’t think of a better way to spend $11 for an hour of conversation with a good friend (and her cute daughter) on a nice sunny day. After several attempts throughout the summer, I finally got the go paddle boating with Kyndal and Kyla. The weather was PERFECT, it wasn’t nearly as much work as I anticipated (unless we got stuck in the wake of a passing boat) and we followed it up with a delicious picnic. It was an incredible way to spend a Saturday afternoon. I see more paddle boating expeditions in my future.

New Thing #41: Chiefs Game

Posted in Uncategorized by kimwilcox on September 7, 2010

Let me tell you a story. One time in high school, my then boyfriend used his dad’s season tickets to take me on a date to Arrowhead. We were just a few rows from the sidelines (aka perfect seats). He bought us some food, a book (whatever it’s called with player information, etc) and we were set.  Just as the game was about to start it began to rain. No not rain, pour. To the point the game was postponed. Before we knew it water was filling the bleachers. We laughed about it, hung out and waited for it to let up. The flooding rose above our knees, we gave in and went home. So although I was at Arrowhead and had attempted to watch one, I had yet to see a Chiefs game in person.

Fast forward 11 years. Different boyfriend. Different season tickets. PERFECT game watching weather. Two weekends ago I got to watch their first preseason game of the year. The Chiefs lost, but it was still a great evening. I loved the atmosphere and can only imagine how much better it is during a regular game. Now I just need to learn more about football. I understand the very basics, but that’s not enough. Fortunately I have a feeling my football knowledge will be growing this season as I continue to hang around a certain fanatic. 🙂
